A soaring stunner: Armando Michelotti (1877 - 1938), "L’Aviatrice Amelia Earhart", ca. 1930, alabaster, 41 cm (h) x 38. 5 cm (w)- (16 in x 15.15 in). Volterra, once a walled Etruscan mountain town of Tuscan legend, is today known as the capital of this loveliest of stones. Volterra alabaster was developed in the 1500s beginning with the candelabras of Bartolomeo Rossetti as well as with vases commissioned by the Medici for the duke of Bavaria. In the late 1700s the aristocratic Marcello Inghirami created a renowned school for the development of this prized alabaster, a tradition later continued by such sculptors as Albino Funioli (1830-1906) and Giuseppe Bessi (1857-1922).
